Visa for research

The research visa enables qualified researchers from non-EU countries to implement their projects in Saxony and to teach at recognized institutions.

Prerequisites

  1. Doctoral degree or suitable university degree with access to doctoral programs.
  2. Conclusion of a hosting agreement or an employment contract with a research institution.
  3. Obligation on the part of the research institution to cover living and travel expenses for up to six months after completion of the research activity. (This obligation does not apply if your research activity is mainly financed from public funds).

If you are a highly qualified specialist in the field of science and research and do not meet the requirements for a visa for the purpose of research, the EU Blue Card may be an alternative.

Duration and rights

  • The visa is valid for at least one year. At least two years for EU or other international programs. It can be shorter if the project ends earlier.
  • You may research and teach at the host institution. Changes to the project do not change your rights.
  • After four years, you can apply for a settlement permit if you meet all the requirements.
  • After the end of your research, you have up to 18 months to find a suitable new job. To do this, you can apply for a residence permit to look for a job.

Residence for researchers from EU countries

  • No residence permit is required for stays of up to 180 days within a 360-day period.
  • The host institution must inform the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) and provide and submit proof of a contract, valid passport and secure living conditions.
  • Researchers are allowed to research and teach.

Temporary residence for mobile researchers

  • For stays longer than 180 days, maximum one year, a residence permit from another EU country is required.
  • In addition, a valid passport and a hosting contract are required.
  • If the application is submitted at least 30 days before the start of the stay , researchers may work and conduct research for up to 180 days while the application is being processed.
  • Eligible for research and teaching activities.
