Vocational training at school

Updated:

In some training occupations, you complete your training at a vocational college. In this case, you do not need a training contract with a company. Recognized vocational qualifications as part of school-based vocational training can be obtained for professions in the healthcare and social services sector or rare skilled trades.

Course of the school-based vocational training

You attend full-time vocational school and supplement this with practical phases in suitable companies and institutions. The duration of vocational school training with a recognized qualification is usually 2 to 3 years. Upon passing the examination, you will receive a state-recognized qualification and may officially use the job title.

Requirements for school-based vocational training

A secondary school leaving certificate or equivalent is required for access to many school-based training courses. The State Office for Schools and Education is responsible for recognizing foreign school-leaving qualifications. Health aptitude is also required in the health and care sector. Language skills at level B2 (CEFR) - in some cases also C1 - are required, as technical and educational language is used primarily in theoretical training.

Advantages of school-based vocational training

School-based training offers the great advantage of direct access to professions in the social, medical or creative fields. You do not need to find a training company for this form of vocational training. Lessons only take place at the vocational school - so there is no switching between school and training company as with dual vocational training.
