Visa for language acquisition

You can improve your German language skills in Saxony. With a language acquisition visa, you can travel to Saxony for a language course and prepare for your next professional or academic step.

Prerequisites

  1. A valid passport.
  2. Registration for an intensive German language course that takes place daily and comprises at least 18 lessons per week.
  3. Proof that your livelihood is secured - for example through a blocked account(at least 11,904 euros in 2025), a scholarship or a declaration of commitment from a person in Germany.
  4. Valid health or travel insurance
  5. There must be no reason for you to be deported.

Visa validity and secondary employment

The visa or residence permit for language acquisition is valid for as long as your language course lasts - but for a maximum of twelve months. During this time, you may work up to 20 hours per week alongside your language course.

Apply for a visa to learn the language

You can apply for a visa at the embassy or consulate general of the Federal Republic of Germany responsible for you in the district in which you are resident. You can use the consulate finder of the Federal Foreign Office to find the responsible diplomatic mission abroad.

You must pay a visa fee when you submit your application. The fee is non-refundable.
